Two members of the Breckenridge High School One-Act Play troupe were named to the All-Star Cast and the production of “Wit” placed fourth at the State UIL competition in Austin on Saturday, May 6.

Breckenridge’s Avery Rodgers and Zaea Ragle, who play college professor Vivian Bearing and her nurse Susie Monahan, respectively, were two of the eight All-Star Cast members. The BHS one-act play, “Wit”  by American playwright Margaret Edson, is about a university English professor who is dying from ovarian cancer.

“Our journey with ‘Wit’ has come to an end, and we say goodbye to our five seniors,” BHS theater teacher Tucker Young said in a Facebook post. “The past six months of this show have been challenging, but it has all paid off in the end!”

The first place performance was “A Monster Calls” by Mount Vernon High School, followed by “Moon Over Buffalo” by Canadian High School and “Oedipus El Rey” by Hempstead High School.

The other competitors were Randolph High School-Universal City (“We All Fall Down”), White Oak High School (“The Tragedy of Hamlet”), Van Vleck High School (“Chemical Imbalance: A Jekyll and Hyde Play”) and  Industrial High School-Vanderbilt (“The Sparrow”).

According to Young, this was the first time in 24 years that BHS has made it to the State UIL competition for One-Act Play.
