Six Buckaroo athletes to compete at State track meet
Six Buckaroo track athletes will be competing at the UIL Track and Field State Meet on May 11 in Austin after placing at the Regional Meet in Abilene this weekend.
Representing Breckenridge High School at the State contest will be:
- Chase Lehr, 800-meter run
- Sawyer Wimberley, 200-meter dash
- Adler Loftis, discus
- The 4×400 relay team, including Angel Alvarado, Jaime Cruz, Chase Lehr and Karter Smalley
At the Region I Meet in Abilene, Lehr placed first in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:52.03, a personal record and more than 2 and a half seconds faster than the second-place runner. Lehr is the defending state champion in the 800-meter, winning a gold medal at the 2022 UIL State Track and Field Meet with a time of 1:55.41.
In Abilene, Wimberley came in first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.88, a personal record. Loftis placed second in discus with a distance of 156-05, a personal record.
The Breckenridge 4×400 relay team came in third place with a time of 3:21.15, behind first-place Vernon (3:20.33) and Crane (3:20.65). The top two winners in each of the four regions go to the State competition. However, the fastest third-place team in the state gets to go as a Wild Card entry. Breckenridge’s time not only beat all of the other third-place winners but also was faster than all of the other first-place winners, including Region II’s Gunter (3:23:10), Region III’s Clifton (3:25.88) and Region IV’s Universal City-Randolph (3:25.55).
Overall, at the Regional meet, Breckenridge came in second with 55 points, behind Brock High School with 70 points. The Buckaroos also earned points from Chase Lehr in the 400-meter dash (fourth place with a time of 50.05), Jerry Lawson in the shot put (fourth place with a distance of 51-4.25, a personal record), Braye Cantrell in the 300-meter hurdles (fifth place with a time of 40.70), Isaiah Lehr in the discus (sixth place with a distance of 144-2) and the 4×200 relay team of Jaime Cruz, Kennet Medina, Alex Saucedo and Sawyer Wimberley (fifth place with a time of 1:30.61). Also competing for Breckenridge were Jaxson Escalon in pole vault and Chance Stewart in the 1,600-meter run.
In the Girls Regional Meet, Breckenridge’s 4×400 relay team of Destiny Jamison, Haylie Mendoza, Ruthie Valdez and Kassidy Whitaker came in fifth place with a time of 4:07.40. Valdez also came in sixth place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:00.84, a personal record, and Joni Jackson came in 10th in discus with a distance of 110-07, a personal record.

The Breckenridge Texan, a non-profit news outlet serving Breckenridge and Stephens County, Texas, has launched its annual NewsMatch fundraising campaign, running through Dec. 31, 2024.
As a non-profit news outlet, the Breckenridge Texan depends on donations, in addition to ad sales, to fund daily operations, including website costs, freelance writers, and basic office expenses. The organization aims to raise $4,000, which could be tripled to $12,000 through various matching programs, including the NewsMatch program and the Rural Partner Fund, which is supported by several major foundations.
Founded in 2017 by journalists Tony Pilkington and Carla McKeown, the Breckenridge Texan provides daily local news coverage, weekly newsletters, photo galleries, a community calendar, and obituaries. The outlet serves both local residents and people outside the community seeking information about Breckenridge and Stephens County, including potential new residents and businesses. They chose the non-profit structure to maintain local control of news coverage while minimizing the financial burden on the community.
