Registration open for upcoming Hunter Education class
A Hunter Education classroom course will be offered in Breckenridge from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, 2023, and there are 10 seats available, as of the morning of Sunday, Feb. 12.
Former Stephens County Sheriff Will Holt volunteers as a Hunter Education and Safety Instructor with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and will be teaching the class, which will take place in two locations.
The course is designed for novice or young hunters, ages 9 years and older, and Holt says 11 years old is ideal. It will cover the core competencies of firearm and hunting safety, hunting ethics and wildlife conservation. Students should not bring their own firearms. Holt said he recommends an adult or mentor attend the class with the young kids to help them pay attention, to help them understand certain topics, and to build hunting and outdoor bonds.
The fee for the certification is $15, payable by check or cash. There will be no charge for parents/mentors sitting in. All materials will be provided.
They day will start with the classroom portion of the course at 8 a.m. in the Breckenridge Independent School District’s Athletic Facility — aka the “new gym” — located at the intersection of North Live Oak Avenue and West Second Street, across from 515 N. Live Oak Ave. Participants need to enter the gym from the 500 block of North Live Oak, on the west side of the gym; the classroom will be immediately on left, Room AFA #2.
After the classroom portion of the course, participants will go to lunch on their own; parents need to be prepared to take their kids somewhere in Breckenridge to eat.
At 1 p.m. the field course portion will begin at 1805 and 1807 W. Walker St. in Breckenridge. Parents should park in the front lot of 1807 W. Walker St, which is immediately next to Breckenridge Auto & Engine.
Parents or guardians are welcome to attend if they need to also be certified or if they want to attend to assist the instructor and engage in quality time with their child.
The Hunter Education Classroom Course lasts a maximum of 6 hours of classroom instruction, not including registration, breaks, test administration and certification card distribution.
