McKenna Adams crowned 2023 Buckaroo Queen
On Saturday night, Jan. 28, a crowd of Breckenridge High School students and their family and friends, along with teachers and school staff members, gathered in Bailey Auditorium for the school’s 98th Coronation. McKenna Adams was crowned the 2023 Buckaroo Queen by Great Lord Chamberlain Jerry Lawson, surrounded by the Royal Court.
The ceremony featured the theme “An Enchanted Evening,” and the stage was decorated in black, purple and gold with a chandelier hanging from the ceiling.
The Master of Ceremonies was Robert Burchett, and the entertainment was provided by:
- Preslie Malcuit and Kamryn Briley — “Love You in the Dark”
- LBC Dancers — “Flowers”
- Cabel Perkins and BHS Coach Jared McLane — “You Are the Reason”
- Masquerade Dancers — The Waltz
- BHS Coach Mark Young — “Lean on Me”

The Light and Sound Technician was Tucker Young, and the Coronation Directors were Krista Wilcox and Leah Robertson. The event was sponsored by The Woman’s Forum and The White Orchid Floral & Events. Following the formal ceremony, the Royal Court reassembled on the stage for photos by Photography and Media Director Calvin Best.
In the entertainment portion, the Masquerade Dancers included Sam “Jewel” Green, Brittany Melton, Emma Williams, Giselle Reyes, Adriana Perez and Preslie Malcuit. The LBC Dancers included McKinley Gonzales, Paisley Thornton, Leia Walton, Addi Lowrey, Lilly Brown, Avery Wimberley, Marielle Green, Marianna Martinez, Zoie Middleton, Mattie Stewart, Alice Selles and Dylan Fisher. The choreographer/coach was Karla Ruiz.

As a non-profit news outlet, the Breckenridge Texan depends on donations, in addition to ad sales, to fund daily operations, including website costs, freelance writers, and basic office expenses. The organization aims to raise $4,000, which could be tripled to $12,000 through various matching programs, including the NewsMatch program and the Rural Partner Fund, which is supported by several major foundations.
Founded in 2017 by journalists Tony Pilkington and Carla McKeown, the Breckenridge Texan provides daily local news coverage, weekly newsletters, photo galleries, a community calendar, and obituaries. The outlet serves both local residents and people outside the community seeking information about Breckenridge and Stephens County, including potential new residents and businesses. They chose the non-profit structure to maintain local control of news coverage while minimizing the financial burden on the community.
