Students, faculty and administrators from the local schools honored the seven members of the Breckenridge Independent School District Board of Trustees at their meeting last week. January is School Board Appreciation Month.

“This is School Board Appreciation Month,” Superintendent Bryan Allen said. “And this is the time of the year that we take to thank each one of these seven individuals that put in so much to see this district improve. And, they don’t get paid, you know, they don’t get the glory. They normally just get the complaints and the gripes. And they keep coming back month after month and year after year to see our district keep getting better and making that progress.”

Allen read a proclamation from Gov. Greg Abbott, and then each campus honored the board members. Before the meeting started, the school board was treated to a meal provided by Breckenridge Junior High School. During the meeting, East Elementary’s student council, the Buckaroo Head Council, presented the board with a banner proclaiming, “Our School Board Rocks,” and including messages of thanks. They also gave the board members cookies.

South Elementary gave the board members campus shirts and invitations to be a guest reader at South.

In his presentation to the board, Breckenridge High School Principal Paul Armstrong explained that one of the school’s underlying mantras is “Once a Buck, always a Buck.”

“It doesn’t matter if doesn’t matter if you’re here for … 25 years, it doesn’t matter if you’re here for a year…once a Buck, always a Buck,” he said as he explained the plaques presented to the board members. Similar plaques have been created to be posted outside each BHS teacher’s door.

Other Business

During the meeting, Superintendent Bryan Allen presented the BISD 2023 Strategic Plan, which includes the  BISD Mission of “To educate and empower every student to reach maximum potential for life beyond school” and the BISD Vision of “BUCKAROO PRIDE – A Culture of Excellence!” The plan also includes the school district’s belief statements and priorities. Allen also discussed BISD’s enrollment numbers and Average Daily Attendance numbers, both of which are down. He said that enrollment is cyclical and often drops after the Christmas holiday but starts increasing after Spring Break. The ADA is affected by the lower enrollment but also by students who have been out lately due to various illnesses.

The board approved amendments to the 2022-2023 budget and heard a request for funds to purchase and install structured cabling for the BISD network. They decided to postpone the decision on the cabling so that they could look into the situation more.

The cabling request will be included in a special meeting the board will have at noon Tuesday, Jan. 24. The meeting also will include amendments to the 2022-23 budget and a discussion and possible action on BISD having a four-day instructional week. Click here for more details on that meeting.
