Annual livestock show opens with rabbit judging, continues today and Saturday

The 65th annual Stephens County Junior Livestock Show began Thursday, Jan. 5, in the Stephens County Expo on U.S. Highway 180 East. It will continue through the sale Saturday afternoon, Jan. 7.

Kayla Wood sang the National Anthem to open the show. The rabbit judging immediately followed. Other activities taking place Thursday evening included the weigh-ins for the rabbits, poultry, goats, sheep and swine, and the ag mechanics projects check-in.

The events will continue today, Friday, Jan. 6, with the poultry judging starting at 8 a.m. Other events on the schedule for today include the weigh-in of the cattle; the judging of the sheep, goats, swine and cattle; the Pee Wee Show; and, the judging of the Ag Mechanics Projects. On Saturday, the SCJLS will continue with the interviews for the Herdsman Award, the  Jacob Jackson Master Showman competition, livestock judging contest and the floral design contest. The show will wrap up with the presentation of awards, the buyers luncheon and the sale.

There will be a cleanup event for all exhibitors on Sunday afternoon, Jan. 8.

The Breckenridge Texan, a non-profit news outlet serving Breckenridge and Stephens County, Texas, has launched its annual NewsMatch fundraising campaign, running through Dec. 31, 2024.

As a non-profit news outlet, the Breckenridge Texan depends on donations, in addition to ad sales, to fund daily operations, including website costs, freelance writers, and basic office expenses. The organization aims to raise $4,000, which could be tripled to $12,000 through various matching programs, including the NewsMatch program and the Rural Partner Fund, which is supported by several major foundations.

Founded in 2017 by journalists Tony Pilkington and Carla McKeown, the Breckenridge Texan provides daily local news coverage, weekly newsletters, photo galleries, a community calendar, and obituaries. The outlet serves both local residents and people outside the community seeking information about Breckenridge and Stephens County, including potential new residents and businesses. They chose the non-profit structure to maintain local control of news coverage while minimizing the financial burden on the community.
