Stephens Memorial Hospital will kick off National Blood Donor Month with a blood drive on Thursday, Jan. 5.

The Carter BloodCare bus will be set up at 101 S. Hartford St. from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday. Walk-ins will be accepted, as space is available, but appointments are recommended. Click here to schedule a blood donation appointment or call Chris Curtis at SMH at 254-559-3363.

According to information from America’s Blood Centers, an organization of independent blood centers in the United States and Canada, January was first proclaimed as National Blood Donor Month by President Richard Nixon in January 1970 as a way to pay tribute to voluntary blood donors while encouraging more people to give.

One in seven patients entering a hospital require blood to be available. This ranges from trauma victims to patients battling sickle cell disease or Thalassemia, or ensure a successful organ or bone marrow transplant, according to the organization. Cancer patients use 25 percent of all blood donations, and blood transfusions are needed in one out of every 83 newborn deliveries in America today, a rate that increased by more than 50 percent between 2006 and 2015.

In addition to the hospital’s blood drives, the Rotary Club of Breckenridge also hosts quarterly blood drives in March, June, September and December. Keep an eye on the Breckenridge Texan for news about upcoming blood drives.
