After a two-year hiatus, the First Methodist Church of Breckenridge will host its community Turkey Dinner on Thursday, Nov. 10.

Tickets for dine-in or take-out cost $15 each and must be purchased in advance; no tickets will be available at the door. Tickets may be purchased from some church members, at the church office or at First National Bank and InterBank. Only 500 tickets are available.

The meal will be served from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the church’s Christian Life Center at 419 W. Walker St. and will include turkey, dressing, gravy, cranberry sauce, green beans, new potatoes, fruit salad, roll, and pecan or pumpkin pie. Drinks will include coffee, tea or water (for the dine-in meals only).

Prior to the break caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting restrictions and guidelines, the pre-Thanksgiving event had been held for 73 consecutive years. It began in 1947 by church member Margaret Hallauer. In its earliest days, the event featured hamburgers and coincided with a church bazaar. A few years later, the meal was changed to a turkey dinner and nowadays includes a bake sale and gift items for sale in a “Country Store.” Funds raised through the event will be used to support a variety of church programs.

To prepare for the dinner, church members started making pies earlier this month, baking 40 pumpkin pies and 45 pecan pies. Using the church’s two kitchens, those gathered for the pie baking used four large ovens and two smaller ovens to bake the pies from scratch, using recipes they’ve used for many years. On Wednesday, Oct. 19, they baked the pumpkin pies, and the following day, they baked the pecan pies.

The pies will be frozen until the Turkey Dinner. Everything else will be cooked and assembled just prior to the dinner.

For more information, call the church at 254-559-8208.
