Annual Turkey Trot race kicks off Thanksgiving Holiday for South Elementary students, teachers

South Elementary students were joined by teachers, parents and others for the annual Turkey Trot run on Friday morning, the last day of school before the Thanksgiving holiday break.
Breckenridge Police Chief Bacel Cantrell and other officers helped block off the runners’ route in the neighborhood around the school for the race.
The event was started by South Elementary PE teacher Tamara Russell several years ago when she was working at North Elementary. When Breckenridge Independent School District reorganized the schools last year, the tradition moved to South Elementary, along with Russell.
The route is a little more than a mile long. Some of the teachers dressed up in costumes, including a turkey and a pilgrim, and one student wore a hot dog costume.
The first 30 runners to cross the finish line won Turkey Trot t-shirts. The winners were:
