The artistic quilts of Maynard Westlake are on exhibit at the Breckenridge Fine Arts Center through Nov. 2, and the BFAC will host an artist meet-and-greet from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, for Westlake.

The exhibit features about 50 quilts, including 10 of Westlake’s artistic quilts that were inspired by the paintings of Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh, as well as a collection of his more traditional quilts.

Some of the paintings that Westlake has recreated with fabric and thread include “Starry Night” by Van Gogh and “Tulip Fields with the Rijnsburg Windmill” and “Lady in a Garden” by Monet. Westlake, who lives in Graham, uses both hand- and machine-quilting, depending on the project. Most of the artistic quilts are machine-quilted using the free motion method, allowing Westlake to contour the stitching around the elements of the painting-inspired quilts.

Shalon Taylor Watson, director of the BFAC, said that Westlake was inspired to create the “Starry Night” quilt while drinking coffee from a mug that featured the painting.

The BFAC is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays, and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays; it is closed on Sundays and Mondays. The arts center is located at 207 N. Breckenridge Ave. For more information, call 254-559-6602.
