According to a media release from Stephens County Sheriff Kevin Roach, a suspect fleeing a traffic stop Friday afternoon caused a wreck on South Breckenridge Avenue.

On Friday, Sept. 17, at about 4:23 p.m., a Stephens County Deputy Sheriff attempted to stop a motorcycle for traffic violations in the 500 block of West Walker Street in Breckenridge. The operator and only occupant of the motorcycle, a Breckenridge man in his 20s, evaded the deputy’s attempt to detain him and fled eastbound on the motorcycle, according to Roach.

The deputy was displaying both visual and audible signals notifying the operator to stop. The motorcyclist continued to travel east bound on West Walker Street and then southbound on South Breckenridge Avenue while disregarding several stop lights, the report stated.

The operator of the motorcycle then collided with another vehicle that was crossing South Breckenridge Avenue, westbound on Hullum Street. The motorcycle rider, who was wearing a helmet, sustained major injuries as a result of the collision, the sheriff said.

The deputy administered lifesaving medical treatment to the operator until medics with AMR ambulance service arrived on the scene and took over medical treatment. The operator and only occupant of the other vehicle was also evaluated by AMR medics. The Breckenridge Police Department and the Breckenridge Fire Department also responded to the scene of the crash.

The motorcyclist was transported by AMR to the helipad at Stephens Memorial Hospital, where he was transferred to an air ambulance and taken to a larger hospital, Roach said.

Due to the ongoing criminal investigation, the sheriff’s office has not released further details at this time.
