Breckenridge ISD Superintendent Bryan Allen confirmed today that Breckenridge High School Head Baseball Coach Kevin Bartley II resigned last week, and Breckenridge Police Chief Bacel Cantrell said that his department is actively investigating  Bartley concerning an alleged improper relationship with a student.

Earlier today, Allen released a statement via email, saying that the school district is investigating alleged improper electronic communications between an employee and a student.

“I don’t want to say anything that’s going to hinder either our investigation or the police’s investigation,” Allen said. “This is a bad situation.”

Cantrell said that the investigation is still in the very early stages and investigators have more interviews to conduct to complete the investigation.

“We don’t have any probable cause for an arrest or anything like that at this point,” Cantrell said. “By the end of the week, I hope to have some more interviews done, and we’ll have a clearer picture of what’s really going on.”

According to Cantrell, the person that Bartley was allegedly communicating with is 18 years old and graduated last month. However, the police chief said that if the communication took place during the school year, even if the student was 18, an improper student-educator relationship is a felony.

Allen said Bartley turned in his letter of resignation to the district on June 17 but gave no specific reason in the letter for his resignation. It was effective immediately.

He said, because the investigation is ongoing, he can’t comment further on the details of the situation.

In addition to resigning his coaching job at BHS, Bartley also resigned last week from his position as a manager at the Breckenridge city pool. Houston Satterwhite, assistant city manager of operations and public works director, said Bartley put in his resignation last week, and when the City became aware of the school district’s investigation, he was let go immediately. Satterwhite said they were aware of no issues involving Bartley while he was working as pool manager.
