On Friday evening, Breckenridge High School announced on its Facebook page that the varsity and junior varsity football games against the Jim Ned High School Indians have been canceled due to the COVID-19 situation in Breckenridge.

Breckenridge Independent School District Athletic Director Casey Pearce said in the announcement, “After continuing to monitor the COVID exposure to our football program, we have chosen to suspend activities through October 30th for our JV & Varsity program. With additional athletes testing COVID positive and others coming in close contact, we have determined that we must continue the suspension of activity beyond the current week. This means we will not be playing Jim Ned on October 29th or 30th.”

The coach said he plans for the program to resume full activities on Monday, Nov. 2, when the players will begin preparing for the last varsity game of the season in San Angelo against the Texas Leadership Charter Academy Eagles.

BISD also announced Friday evening that a staff member at the high school has tested positive for COVID-19. The school district now has 13 active cases, five among staff members, eight among students.

County-wide, there are 55 known active cases of the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, according to Stephens Memorial Hospital. Three people are hospitalized locally, and on Friday afternoon there were eight patients awaiting test results.
