UPDATE: According to BISD officials, the Breckenridge Junior High School football games (7th and 8th grades) will take place in Buckaroo Stadium against the Eastland junior high teams. The games are scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17.

According to a post on the Eastland Independent School District’s Facebook page, the Maverick’s junior varsity and varsity football games for this week have been canceled due to the number of COVID-19 diagnoses and the number of Eastland student athletes who are out with the disease caused by the coronavirus.

“…Eastland ISD has determined it is in the best interest of all parties involved to cancel the junior varsity as well as the varsity football games scheduled for September 17th and 18th,” the post by Dr. Jason Cochran, superintendent of the district, stated. “Middle School football games will go on as scheduled. This is not a decision taken lightly but one I do believe is correct given the current circumstances. I appreciate your support and understanding.”

Breckenridge ISD sent out a message to Buckaroo fans through its new ParentSquare notification system, notifying them of the cancellation.

“The Eastland Mavericks and their administration did all they could to prevent this from happening, but at this point, they have made a decision that is best for their student body and their community. Let’s keep the Eastland Mavericks in our thoughts over the coming days,” BISD Superintendent Bryan Allen said in the message.

More information will be available about previously purchased tickets on Wednesday, Sept. 16, according to BISD officials.

Editor’s note: This story was updated at 8:25 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, to add the update about the junior high games and to remove information from the superintendent indicating all games were canceled.
