One roommate was arrested and the other sent to the hospital following a shooting at a Stephens County residence in June, according to a media release from Stephens County Sheriff Will Holt.

At 11:46 a.m. Sunday, June 21, the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a shooting call at a residence on County Road 260. The Breckenridge Police Department and American Medical Response (AMR) ambulance service assisted. The person who was shot was found outside of his home.

The victim was transported to an out-of-town hospital via air ambulance. He was released from the hospital on June 25, according to the media release.

The Stephens County Sheriff’s Office processed the crime scene.

An initial warrant was obtained for the suspect, Joe Perez, the victim’s 55-year-old roommate, for Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by Felon. He was arrested in Abilene, on the evening of  June 21 and booked into Taylor County Jail. The suspect is now in the custody of Stephens County Jail.

On Wednesday, June 24, the Board of Pardons and Paroles within the Texas Department of Criminal Justice issued a parole violation warrant of arrest for the suspect at Stephens County Jail with no bond set. The suspect is currently on Parole for the Manufacture or Delivery of a Controlled Substance, Penalty Group One.

The firearm used in the crime was recovered, and a second illegally possessed firearm was seized on Monday, June 22, the sheriff reported.

On June 25, Perez was served two warrants of arrest, unrelated to the shooting, for Assault Causing Bodily Injury – Family Violence (Class A Misdemeanor) and Theft of Property (Greater than $100, Less than $750, Class B Misdemeanor).

The investigation continues, and the Sheriff’s Office expects to file additional charges.
