Members of local Elks Lodge #1480 presented donations to two local organizations on Monday evening, June 22. They donated $1,000 to the Stephens County Humane Society and $1,000 to the local Meals on Wheels organization.

Melynda Flournoy, Exalted Ruler of the local lodge, said the funds came from a Gratitude Grant provided by the Elks National Foundation. She said the local lodge members voted to apply for the grant and chose those two groups to make their donations to because they have lost funding and were hurting.

She said the money was to help the groups with the loss of funding caused by COVID-19-related economic slowdown. Usually the money is used for a project, but this year the Elks Lodge decided to help out the organizations because of COVID-19.

“We voted on the floor to do it,” she said. “It was to help with COVID-19 effects, so we could help them as a donation instead of using the funds for a project. Elks are for community service, veterans and children.”
