Breaking news: BISD agrees to extend school closure due to coronavirus, and approves realignment of campuses
The Breckenridge Independent School District Board of Trustees approved a resolution on Tuesday evening, giving Interim Superintendent Earl Jarrett the go-ahead to extend the school closure in reference to the coronavirus threat, as he deems necessary.
Based on the discussion during the meeting, the closure will be extended for at least an additional two weeks; at this time, Breckenridge schools are expected to be closed through April 3 with plans for regular class schedules to resume on April 6. However, Jarrett and school administrators will reevaluate the coronavirus situation and decide if it is safe enough for everyone to return to school then. During the closure, students will still receive instruction, with younger students receiving printed packets of materials and older students doing their work online.
Additionally, the school board voted to close North Elementary in order to realign the campuses. The realignment will include East Elementary having pre-kindergarten through second grades; South Elementary, third through fifth grades; Breckenridge Junior High School, sixth through eighth grades; and Breckenridge High School, ninth through 12th grades.
Although all of the logistics haven’t been worked out, the administrators have been working on solutions to the various obstacles that were brought up in previous meetings.
The Breckenridge Texan will have a complete story on the school board meeting with more details on Wednesday.
