Jaime D. Cantu Jr. recently joined the Breckenridge Field Office staff of the USDA – Natural Resources Conservation Service as a Rangeland Management Specialist.

Cantu was raised in Laredo, where he graduated from high school. After high school graduation, he attended Texas A&M University-Kingsville, where he received a Bachelor of Science in Range and Wildlife Management.

“Range and Wildlife Conservation has always been a passion of mine especially since I come from such a background,” Cantu said. “I like the mission of the NRCS, which is to work with producers to conserve and improve all the natural resources.”

While attending TAMUK, Cantu worked with the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute and with one of the King Ranch hunting leases. He was a member of several organizations during his undergraduate career, including the Texas Youth Hunting Program with Texas Parks and Wildlife, Coastal Conservation Association, Ducks Unlimited, and TAMUK Wildlife Society.

Cantu’s duties with the NRCS will be to assist farmers and ranchers with the planning and application of conservation practices and total resource management systems by providing conservation planning assistance from initial evaluation to completion. He will also work with landowners in the development of conservation cost assistance programs which NRCS offers, such as the Environmental Quality Incentive Program (EQIP) and the Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP).

“I’m excited to be working in Breckenridge and looking forward to meeting with the folks in the county,” he said. “I invite anyone who is in town to drop by the office, get a cup of coffee and have a conversation with me about NRCS or other conversations issues they may be encountering.”

The Breckenridge NRCS office is located at 105 S. McAmis St. For more information about the NRCS, click here to visit the website.
