The City of Breckenridge will host a Jalapeno Popper Cookoff on Saturday morning, Sept. 21, during Breck Trade Days.

The contest will begin at 9 a.m. in the Trade Barn, which is located in the area of South Dunnigan Avenue and East Hullum Street, and judging will begin at 11:30 a.m. The first place winner will receive $100, and the People’s Choice winner will receive an engraved wooden cutting board and “braggin’ rights.”

The contest is open to anyone. The food must be prepared on-site at the Trade Barn. The food may be marinated overnight at home, but it must be cooked on site. There will only be one category, and all of the ingredients must be in or on a jalapeno; no other pepper will be allowed.

Contestants must provide their own tables, equipment, and all ingredients. Electricity will be provided. Smoke is to be kept to a minimum in the Trade Barn, so wood-fired grills, smokers, or pits must remain outside of the Trade Barn.

Contestants must cook a minimum of five jalapeno poppers for judging and may prepare as many as they would like for crowd sampling and the “People’s Choice Award.”

Cooks will be asked to give their dish a name and describe their dish as if it were listed on a restaurant menu. The judges will consider each entry on three criteria, taste, texture and uniqueness/creativity (unique flavor and ingredients).

For more information or to register, call Pam Wright at City Hall at 254-559-8287.
