Chamber to host annual Johnny Bates Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament on Saturday

To raise funds for the six scholarships the Breckenridge Chamber of Commerce awards every year to Breckenridge High School students, the organization hosts the annual Johnny Bates Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament. This year, they have added an event that will let non-golfers join in on the fun, as well.

The golf tournament will be on Saturday, Sept. 7, at the Breckenridge Country Club. Immediately following the regular tournament play will be a Golf Ball Drop, and the winner will receive a $500 Visa gift card.

The tournament will be an 18-hole two-man scramble with tee times at 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The entry fee is $100 per team and will be collected at check-in on Saturday. Participants also will have the opportunity to purchase up to two mulligans per player at $5 per mulligan. Additionally, players can pay $5 at hold #3/#12 to be able to tee off closer to the green.

To liven things up a bit, there will be a heckle-hole this year, and golfers can pay $5 to tee off heckle-free.

Throughout the course, there will be multiple contests, including closest to the pin (hole #7/16) and longest drive (hole #2/11). The longest drive competition will have three winners: men under age 65, men 65 or older and women.

There will be 100 percent payout, less country club fees, and participants will receive an event golf towel and lunch.

New to the tournament this year is the Golf Ball Drop, which will give non-golfers a chance to win some money, as well as a way to donate to the scholarship fund.

For $5 per chance, participants can purchase a ticket with a specific golf ball number on it. The day of the event, after the afternoon play has ended, all of the purchased numbered golf balls will be added to a large bucket, hoisted into the air on a bucket truck, and then thrown over the side. The ball that lands in the hole first — or the closest to the hole if none land in the hole — will be the winner. A maximum of 300 balls will be sold. The winner does not have to be present to win.
