The Breckenridge Buckaroo football players ended their first week of practice in helmets, shoulder pads and 100+ degree temperatures at Buckaroo Stadium on Friday evening. And, so far, Breckenridge High School Head Football Coach Casey Hubble likes what he sees.

He said that, despite the heat, he saw what he expected to see, especially on a day when it was really hot and they had been used to practicing in the mornings when it was not as hot.

“You start to see some fatigue set in,” Hubble said. “And really, the mistakes that we’ve had, other than today when it’s 100 and whatever degrees, is just because we’re installing our whole offense every day. You know it’s something new, so their brains are spinning. And then you add the stress of having to do it against somebody, and then there are some mistakes happening. But I’m pleased with where we’re at; I’m pleased with the knowledge that our kids have. We just gotta get better and keep polishing it up and get to where we can function at a really high level.”

The community will have a chance to come out and meet the 2019 Buckaroos at  “Meet the Bucks” at 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 23, in downtown Breckenridge, next to the courthouse. All fall sports athletes will be featured — football (varsity and JV), volleyball, cross country and cheerleading. The event will be hosted by Mothers of Buckaroos (The MOB) and will be emceed by Robert Burchett.

Hubble said the football team has been working hard all week, preparing for the upcoming season. “Our kids our fighters; in Breckenridge, we’ve always had fighters. So yeah, I see kids that are working hard and wanting it,” he said.

The first regular football game of the season is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 30, against Jacksboro High School in Buckaroo Stadium.
