For the third year in a row, the Breckenridge Fire Department won the annual Battle of the Badges Blood Drive sponsored by the Rotary Club of Breckenridge and Carter BloodCare.

The blood drive, which took place last month, allowed those donating blood to vote for the fire department, the Breckenridge Police Department or the Stephens County Sheriff’s Department. Breckenridge Fire Chief Calvin Chaney was on hand to accept the winner’s plaque.

According to Colleen Horan, a consultant with Carter BloodCare, 54 units of blood were collected over the three-day drive in June. That’s 11 more units than were collected last year. Each unit of blood can help three people, so Breckenridge’s blood drive will be able to help up to 162 patients who need blood, she said.

“We are in a blood crisis right now,” Horan said at the Rotary Club meeting. “Please encourage anyone you know to donate blood.”

She explained that blood supplies run low during the summer months because high school and college students are not at school, where they often participate in blood drives. The annual summer crises typically are resolved after Labor Day in September.

The next Rotary Club blood drive is scheduled for 1-5 p.m. Sept. 5 at Breckenridge’s First National Bank.
