What do cantaloupe, peppermint, prickly pears, cherries, pecans, apples and jalapenos have in common? They were all in the ice cream served up at Breck Trade Days on Saturday when the City of Breckenridge hosted its Summer Freeze-Off.

Six contestants showed up to show off their culinary skills and vie for the prizes.

Pam Wright won both the People’s Choice award and First Place for her Cherry Pecan Ice Cream.

Colleen Dyroff’s Texas Tuna (prickly pear) Ice Cream won Second Place.

The mother-daughter ice cream team of Cynthia Hall and Ashley Biggs won the drawing that was held for the Golden Scoop Award. They made Peppermint Ice Cream.

Also participating were Lisa Duggan, who made Apple Pie Ice Cream; Leslie Harrison, who made Jalapeno Cheesecake Ice Cream; and, Andy McCuistion, who made Cantaloupe Ice Cream.

The prizes included $100 for first place, $50 for second place and a cutting board for People’s Choice. Additionally, there was a drawing for the Golden Scoop Award, and Lee’s Bees of Breckenridge donated a half-pint of honey for each contestant.

The judges for the contest were Jim and Judy Caraway, Heather Robertson-Caraway and Dick and Connie Garcia.

Breck Trade Days is an open-air market held on the third Saturday of each month at the Breck Trade Barn, located just south of the Breckenridge City Park in the area of Dunnigan Avenue and East Hullum Street. There is no charge for vendors to set up a booth on a first-come-first-served basis. For more information about Breck Trade Days, call the City of Breckenridge at 254-559-8287.
