Child Welfare Board launches balloons in honor of local foster kids
On Monday morning a small group of people holding helium balloons gathered at Foundation Park in downtown Breckenridge.
The group, each one holding one or more helium balloons in their hands, included members of the Stephens County Child Welfare Board, who, along with County Judge Michael Roach and Breckenridge Municipal Judge Kim Baggett, had gathered their annual balloon launch.
According to Sharon Wimberley, president of the board, each balloon that is released at the event represents a child who is currently living in foster care in Stephens County. She said there were 27 balloons released at Monday’s event because there are 27 children in the county currently in foster care.
Following a prayer led by Roach, each child’s gender and age were read off as a balloon was released in their honor.
After all the balloons had been released, members of the group held hands for another prayer led by Roach.
Child Welfare board members who participated in the balloon launch were Alva Careg, Linda Burdic, Stephanee Russell, Ruth Taylor, Carla Barnes, Fran Sikes, Jan Davis, Sandy Broyles, Linda Lippe and Sharon Wimberley.
