City of Breckenridge to host chicken wings cook-off on Saturday
The City of Breckenridge will host a chicken wings cook-off on Saturday, May 18, 2019, at the Trade Barn at Breckenridge Park. The King of the Wings – Chicken Fight will take place during this weekend’s Breck Trade Days event.
The contest is open to anyone, and it will begin at 8:30 a.m. with judging to start at 11:30 a.m.
There is only one category – Any way you want it. That means contestants may cook any type of chicken wings they want, including cut wings, whole wings, hot, spicy or mild. Although, the organizers ask that the cooks indicate if their wings are hot so that there are no surprises for the judges.
To enter, fill out a registration at the City of Breckenridge offices. On the form, you’ll need to give your dish a name and describe your dish like you would if you put it on a restaurant menu.
The chicken wings must be prepared on site at Breckenridge Trade Barn; they may be marinated over night, but they must be cooked on site. Contestants need to keep the wings chilled and fresh before cooking and then keep them hot after cooking.
Electricity will be provided. Contestants may cook their wings inside the Trade Barn. However, smoke is to be kept to a minimum in the Trade Barn, so wood-fired grills, smokers, or pits must remain outside of the Trade Barn.
Contestants must provide their own tables, equipment, and all ingredients. They must cook a minimum of 25 wings and provide six wings for judging. Boxes will be provided for presentation to the judges.
The food will be judged on three criteria:
• Taste – 60%
• Originality-25% (Unique flavors and ingredients)
• Appearance – 15% (Plating is important)
First place will receive $100, and second place will receive $50. The People’s Choice winner will receive an apron.
