Fine Arts Center to host reception on Saturday for artist Tonya Holmes Shook
The Breckenridge Fine Arts Center will host a reception for Tonya Holmes Shook from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 16, to open the exhibit “History of the Common Man,” featuring the paintings of the artist from Snyder.
Shook was born in Oklahoma, grew up in Tucumcari, New Mexico, and has always called Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma her home.
All her inspiration comes from these states, and her work is all historical in nature, according to information from Shalon Wilson, director of the BFAC. Shook loves to paint in sepia tones but also uses vivid colors in her work.
She painted her first oil painting at age 10, and at 11 she won first place at Quay County Fair in New Mexico. The painting was a watercolor of stampeding horses, and she beat out all the other age groups to win the overall contest, Wilson says.
The Breckenridge Fine Arts Center exhibit will feature 150 of Shook’s work in the Main Gallery through May 3. The reception on March 16 will be free and open to the public.
The Breckenridge Fine Arts Center is located at 207 N. Breckenridge Ave. and is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. For more information, call the BFAC at 254-559-6602.
