Hibbett Sports, Inc., closed its Breckenridge store on Monday, March 11, laying off six employees, according to former store manager Rob Durham.

The local store opened in July 2015 and was located in the shopping center at 3732 W. Walker St.

“It was strictly a corporate decision (to close the store),” Durham said Tuesday afternoon. “Mineral Wells and Graham are the two closest stores, and there are two in Abilene.”

Durham said he has the option to continue working for the company at a different location. He was in the store Tuesday helping deal with the store’s inventory. The Breckenridge store had two full-time employees and four part-time employees.

In a Hibbett Sports news release for the third quarter of the Fiscal Year 2019, which was issued in November, the company reported that it had opened seven new stores and closed 24 stores in that quarter. The same report stated that the company expected to have 82 closures in FY2019, including 25 in the fourth quarter. The FY2019 and the fourth quarter ended on Feb. 2.
