U.S. Highway 180 West is opened up, as of 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 1, according to Breckenridge Fire Chief Calvin Chaney. A stretch of the highway just west of the Breckenridge city limits was closed almost a month ago after a sinkhole developed over a culvert at a creek crossing.

The culvert was replaced and the roadway patched. However, there are still warning signs posted on the highway because there are no center stripes in the area where the road was repaired.

The Texas Department of Transportation reported that the two culverts over the creek were scheduled for replacement this fall; however, heavy rains in recent months led to the sinking of the roadway, causing the emergency situation.

A contractor was obtained immediately after the problem developed, and traffic was detoured during the construction. Crews completed paving above the culverts Friday evening, allowing the roadway to be opened to traffic again.
