Shelby Givens, Jimmy McKay win floral, ag mechanics contests
Although most of the Stephens County Junior Livestock Show deals directly with the raising and then showing of the animals, from rabbits to cattle, two of the competitions are a little different – the Agriculture Mechanics Contest and the Floral Design Contest. Both of those highlight other skills the students have.
This year, Jimmy McKay won the Ag Mechanics Grand Champion Overall award for his project, and Shelby Givens won the Floral Design Grand Champion award.
The Floral Design Contest was different than in previous years and included on-site design.
“This is based on a real-world scenario – a wedding reception,” said Jessie Shortes, Breckenridge High School agricultural science and FFA teacher. “We took some ideas from the larger shows. I think it offers a fairer platform to compete on.”
The students were all given the same type of flowers with which to design a centerpiece that would be appropriate for a brunch wedding reception; the color scheme was peach and crème. Each of the 12 contestants could choose their own container and well as some of the extra floral pieces that were available. They had 60 minutes to decide on the style of their design and to create the centerpiece.
The entries were judged by Carla Hill and Debra Spees of Main Street Floral and Gifts in Breckenridge.
The Floral Design contest results were:
Grand Champion: Shelby Givens
Reserve Champion: Jake Escalon
Third Place: Addi Street
Fourth Place: Brandee McNight
The complete results of the Ag Mechanics contest were:
Grand Champion Overall – Jimmy McKay
Reserve Champion Overall – Blake Lee and Chris Otts
Grand Champion Farm – Braden Campbell
