Buckaroos battle till last second, but Jim Ned wins first district game

For the second time this season, the weather played a major role in the Breckenridge High School Buckaroos’ football game. Proving the forecasters right, storms rolled in over Indian Stadium Friday night during the halftime of the Breckenridge-Jim Ned varsity game.
The Jim Ned High School Indians scored in each of the first two quarters, kicking a field goal in the first and making a touchdown in the second quarter, for a score of 0-10 in their favor at halftime.
Just after both bands wrapped up their halftime shows, the rain started. Shortly before the halftime break ended, lightning was visible, and a lightning delay was called. The UIL rules call for a 30-minute delay, but each subsequent lightning strike starts the 30-minute clock over again. Overall, the lightning delay lasted a little more than an hour, with play resuming just before 10 p.m.
With only 4:58 left in the game, the Buckaroos scored their only touchdown of the night when Justin Bell caught a pass by Owen Woodward. The extra point kick was good, taking the score to Buckaroos 7, Indians 10.
After another Jim Ned possession, the Buckaroos got the ball with 47 seconds left on the clock. But, it wasn’t enough time for another score. The final score was Breckenridge 7, Jim Ned 10, giving the Buckaroos an overall season record of 2-4 and a district record of 0-1.
Looking forward
This Friday, the Buckaroos will take on the Eastland High School Mavericks in Buckaroo Stadium.
Eastland’s overall record this season is 5-1. They started off district play with a win against Early High School on Friday.
The Buckaroos have a losing record to the Mavericks over the past eight years, last beating Eastland in 2010.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19. On Monday, the forecast is showing a 60 percent chance of rain on Friday.
