City to host beans and cornbread contest on Oct. 20

A Homemade Beans and Cornbread Contest will take place at the upcoming Breck Trade Days event on Saturday, Oct. 20, sponsored by the City of Breckenridge.

The competition will be open to anyone and will include the categories of beans, cornbread and booth decorations. The winners will receive cash prizes. Additionally, there will be People’s Choice awards for the beans and cornbread categories.

The contest will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Trade Barn at Breckenridge Park. Judging will begin at 11:30 a.m., and the booth judging will begin at noon.

Each person may only have one entry in each category. The food can be prepared at home and finished on site. Electricity will be provided at the Trade Barn, but contestants must provide tables, equipment, and ingredients.

For the judging, contestants must provide a minimum of one pint of beans and one pan of cornbread. To be eligible for the People’s Choice awards, contestants will need to have enough beans and cornbread for public tasting.

The food will be judged on the following criteria:

  • Appearance
  • Taste
  • Texture

Booths will be judged on the following criteria:

  • Theme
  • Color
  • Creativity
