Fourth annual Birdhouse Contest kicks off

The City of Breckenridge’s Parks Department is sponsoring the fourth annual Birdhouse Contest for local adults and youth, including businesses and civic organizations.
The deadline for the contest is 10 a.m. Saturday, March 17. Birdhouses and the contest form may be turned in at the City Offices, 105 N. Rose Ave., through Friday, March 16. They may be turned in on the morning of March 17 between 9 and 10 a.m. at the Breck Trade Days Office, 301 Dunnigan St. The entry form may be picked up at the City Offices or the Chamber of Commerce Office, 100 E. Elm St.
The contest is open to everyone. There is no entry fee, but the birdhouses will become the property of the city and will be hung in Birdhouse Park, located at the corner of Baylor Avenue and Hullum Street, as well as in other areas of the Breckenridge City Park.
The entries will be judged on creativity, construction and usability as a birdhouse. First, second and third place winners will be awarded in both the adult (age 18 and older) and youth (age 17 and younger) contests. First Place will receive $100; Second Place, $75; Third Place, $50; and Most Creative, $25.
All birdhouses must be handmade by the entrant; no pre-purchased birdhouses will be allowed. They may be constructed from recycled materials, including gourds, metal, wood, etc. The birdhouses must be non-toxic and be able to withstand the elements outdoors. Also, the birdhouses need to have an access door so that they can be cleaned out.
Business entries should represent the business and have the business name incorporated on the birdhouse. Civic club entries should have the club’s logo featured prominently.
Each birdhouse must be given a name.
The winners will be announced at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 17.
