The Breckenridge Fire Department and the Hubbard Creek Volunteer Fire Department are still on the scene of a house fire west of town this evening, trying to make sure that the fire is completely out and doesn’t spread to any additional homes in the area.

Firefighters responded at about 4:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15, to the fire on Hubbard Creek Lake, just west of the “Mile-Long Bridge” on U.S. Highway 180. The house was located on the south side of the highway, on County Road 221.

The house appeared to be a total loss and was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived, according to first responders.

On the scene, Breckenridge Fire Chief Calvin Chaney said at about 5 p.m. that there were no injuries.

Smoke from the fire could be seen Monday afternoon as far east as State Highway 67, and the flames could be seen from the east side of the U.S. 180 bridge.

At the time of the fire, the National Weather Service was showing a northeasterly wind at 25 miles per hour, with gusts of 35 mph or higher. According to the Texas Forest Service, Stephens County is in a moderate fire danger.

By about 5:15 p.m., the firefighters had the fire mostly contained and were working on a few areas that were still burning.

Additionally, the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office, the Texas Department of Public Safety  and Sacred Cross Emergency Medical Service assisted with the response to the fire.
