A Breckenridge man died Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 14, when the boat he was in crashed and capsized on the creek west of Peeler’s Pier at Hubbard Creek Reservoir.

According to Stephens County Sheriff Kevin Roach, James Cozart, 38, was operating the boat with Roger Cross, 67, when it overturned. Both men were thrown into the water. Cozart pulled Cross to the shore and hiked back to his vehicle to go get help.

Roach said shortly before 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, emergency responders were dispatched to what was reported as a boating accident near Peeler’s Pier. They located Cross, deceased, on the bank of the creek.

Cozart was transported to Stephens Memorial Hospital to be treated for hypothermia, Roach said.

Officials were unable to locate the boat in the dark Wednesday night, the sheriff said. The Texas Parks and Wildlife game wardens are investigating the crash and are working to locate the boat.
