Traffic was backed up on West Walker Street tonight, Tuesday, Oct. 27, as multiple emergency personnel responded to the scene of a two-vehicle wreck around 7 p.m. in front of McDonald’s. One person was injured in the accident.

According to Police Chief Blake Johnson, a pickup truck collided with a tractor-trailer hauling large stone slabs. At the scene of the accident, Johnson said the preliminary investigation indicated that the large truck was traveling east on U.S. Highway 180 (Walker Street) when the west-bound pickup attempted to turn into a business on the south side of the road, pulling into the path of the semi.

The impact knocked the pickup on its side and off the road on the south side of West Walker Street. While law enforcement and emergency medical personnel dealt with the accident, the east-bound lanes of Walker were closed and vehicles were detoured onto south FM 3099 for over an hour. Only one west-bound lane was open, and traffic was backed up for several blocks.

The driver of the pickup, a local man, was transported to Stephens Memorial Hospital by ambulance and then taken by air ambulance to a larger hospital. There were reportedly no other occupants in the pickup. The driver of the tractor-trailer was uninjured, according to emergency responders at the scene.

The Breckenridge Police Department, Breckenridge Fire Department, Sacred Cross EMS, and Stephens County Sheriff’s Office responded to the accident, which remains under investigation.
