Local families with children can get free meals (breakfast and lunch) for their children through June 18 (Monday-Thursday) with the Breckenridge Independent School District’s Summer Meals Program.

The meals will be served in the cafeterias at South Elementary and Breckenridge High School. Breakfast will be served from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m., and lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The meals are available at no charge to all children ages 1 to 18.

The program is part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture-funded nutrition program administered by the Texas Department of Agriculture and BISD. For the children who rely on school meals during the academic year, the Summer Meal Program offers a source of good nutrition for part of the time when school is out for the summer.

In Texas, more than 1 in 5 children struggle with hunger. When the school year ends, many children lose access to consistent, nutritious meals. The Summer Meals Program helps ensure more Texas children have the food they need for an active, healthy life.

BISD is one of many organizations partnering with TDA to serve meals across Texas. Families are encouraged to use these three tools to find a meal site anywhere in the state:

  •  Call 2-1-1 to speak to a live operator
  • Visit www.SummerFood.org for an interactive site locator map
  • Text FOOD or COMIDA to 304-304

For more information locally, contact BISD Food Services Director Mark Nelson by email at mark.nelson@breckenridgeisd.org or by phone at 254-522-9600.
