The Stephens County Commissioners Court accepted the resignation of Constable Brian McBride on Monday, May 4, and moved to appoint Justin Shockley to fill the remainder of the term. McBride’s term expires on Dec. 31.

Shockley defeated McBride in the Republican Primary in March, becoming the Republican nominee for the general election in November. There were no candidates for constable in the Democratic primary, and no write-in or independent candidates have filed to run in November.

McBride’s resignation will take effect on May 15. The court voted to have Shockley assume the position on May 18. Commissioner Mark McCullough made the motion to officially accept his resignation, which passed without opposition.

During the special meeting, County Judge Will Thompson read directly from McBride’s resignation email to the court. McBride said in his email that he would be stepping away from his daily duties ahead of that final date to handle personal matters.

While McBride finishes out his final weeks on leave, Thompson noted that other local law enforcement personnel have stepped in to handle the constable’s duties.

“(The) sheriff’s department is covering right now. Brian is out, been out on some medical leave, and then he’s got some … leave time he’s going to use up,” Thompson said.
