Friends, former co-workers, patients and other community members honored Dr. William E. Prater with a retirement party at Stephens Memorial Hospital on Monday, March 23.

Wearing a sash proclaiming “The Legend Has Retired,” Dr. Prater was presented with a plaque by Dr. Kelli Windsor, the hospital’s chief of staff.

“We thank you for your selfless devotion and compassionate care. You have made an impact on your patients, co workers and community. May your years ahead be filled with the rich rewards of joy and fulfillment you so greatly deserve with best wishes for a happy retirement,” Dr. Windsor said, reading the plaque.

Additionally, Breckenridge Mayor Bob Sims was on hand to present Dr. Prater with a certificate of appreciation from the City of Breckenridge. “Your compassion, professionalism and unwavering commitment to the health and well-being of our community is deeply appreciated,” Sims said. “Your impact will always be felt for the generations to come.”

Dr. Prater has been a physician for more than 40 years and has been caring for patients in Breckenridge for more than 35 years. He earned his board-certification in Family Practice in 1985, has membership in the Texas Medical Association, and has been practicing in Breckenridge since July 1990. He received his Bachelor of Science from Texas A&M University and completed his Doctor of Medicine Degree at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston and his residency in Family Practice at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth.

He has won several People’s Choice Awards, has served as Chief of Staff, and has represented Stephens Memorial Hospital and Breckenridge Medical Center on other committees and boards.
