BISD kicks off new school year: Meet the Teacher welcomes families; first day of class set for Tuesday

By Carla McKeown/Breckenridge Texan
With freshly painted walls and a new theme for the campus, Breckenridge’s East Elementary teachers, administrators and other staff members greeted students, parents, grandparents and others at Friday’s Meet the Teacher Night. On Tuesday morning, Aug. 5, Breckenridge schools will start the 2025-26 school year, with classes starting between 7:45 and 7:55 a.m., depending on the school.
South Elementary also held Meet the Teacher Night on Friday, and the junior high and high school held several back-to-school and schedule pick-up events last week.
On Tuesday morning, East Elementary parents are invited to the school’s library for a “Boo Hoo or Yahoo Parent Breakfast.” Whether they’re shedding a few tears about dropping their kids off for the first day of school or they’re looking forward to a few hours of peace and quiet each day, the parents are welcomed to stop by for a cup of coffee and a snack.

East Elementary Drop-off and pick-up
There are some changes to the drop-off and pick-up routes at East Elementary this year. The students will be dropped off each morning and picked up each afternoon on the east side of the campus, on the Industrial Loop (aka North Graham Avenue), near the intersection with Elm Street. Students will need to exit and enter their vehicles on the passenger side of the vehicles. For safety reasons, school staff will not unload students from the driver’s side.

The flow of traffic for the pick-up and drop-off should be:
- From Walker Street, turn north onto North Hartford Street, a one-way street
- Travel north to Lindsey Street and turn east (right) onto Lindsey, traveling along the back side of the playground to Industrial Loop (Graham Avenue)
- Turn south (right) onto the Industrial Loop and travel to the drop-off/pick-up location
- Exit at Walker Street
Kindergarten, first, and second grade pick-up will start at 3:50 p.m.
The only exception will be Pre-K students, who will be picked up in the circle drive in front of the school; Pre-K students will be dropped off on the Industrial Loop in the mornings. Pre-K pick up will be at 3:30 p.m. If you arrive late after 3:45, you will need to park in the parking lot and walk to the building. The buses will be loading in the circle drive at 3:50 p.m.
See the maps at the end of this story for more details on East Elementary drop-off and pick-up.
Class of 2026
The families of this year’s seniors, the Class of 2026, are planning to meet at 7:30 a.m. in the front high school parking lot, by the pumpjack, for doughnuts and fellowship for the “last first day of school” for the students. At 7:45 a.m., there will be a class picture taken, including the families.
School Breakfasts and Lunches
The breakfast and lunch menus for Breckenridge Independent School District students are posted on the BISD website.
Elementary students can eat breakfast at school each day for free. At the BJHS/BHS cafeteria, students may eat breakfast for $3.40 each for the full-price meal; those who qualify for reduced price meals will pay 45 cents per meal.
At East and South Elementaries, lunch will cost $3.45 for full-priced meals, with those qualifying for reduced prices paying 45 cents. At the junior high and high school, full-priced lunches will cost $3.85 each, with those qualifying for reduced prices paying 45 cents. The BJHS/BHS cafeteria also offers a food bar each day with a variety of options.
Information about reduced-price meals and an application are available on the BISD Food Services webpage.

School Zone Reminders
Drivers need to be aware that the school zones around the three campuses will be active during morning and afternoon school drive times. Not only are there reduced speed limits to avoid, but it is also illegal to use a handheld electronic device while driving in an active school zone.
The Texas Department of Public Safety offers these driving tips:
- Give students extra room and don’t assume they are paying attention to your vehicle. Students are often distracted by mobile devices, listening to electronic devices or by other students, and they may not be paying attention to their surroundings.
- Don’t block crosswalks when stopped at a red light or stop sign.
- Follow the directions of school crossing guards.
- Watch for children on bicycles traveling to and from schools.
- Reduce your speed when you spot a school bus and know children may unexpectedly step into the road without checking for oncoming traffic.
- Be careful around railroad crossings. School buses are legally required to stop at them.
- Know the laws regarding school buses. According to Texas law, if a bus has alternating flashing red signals visible from the front or rear, drivers must stop before reaching the bus. Drivers can only proceed if the flashing lights are no longer activated, the driver signals you to proceed or the bus has resumed driving. Approaching drivers do not have to stop for a school bus that is operating a visual signal if the road is separated by a physical barrier or an intervening space. If a highway is only divided by a left-turn lane, it is not considered divided, and drivers must stop for school buses.
- Drivers who illegally pass a school bus face fines up to $1,250 for the first offense. For people convicted of the offense more than once, the law allows for the person’s driver license to be suspended for up to six months. Criminal charges are possible if a driver causes someone serious bodily injury.
- Always obey speed limits and traffic laws in school zones.
- Remember, texting while driving is illegal in Texas.
