Local children can eat breakfast and lunch for free for several days this month through the Breckenridge Independent School District’s summer meal program.

The school district will serve the meals Mondays through Thursdays through June 19 (June 9-12 and June 16-19) at the East Elementary and Breckenridge High School/Junior High cafeterias. Breakfast will be from 7:30-8:30 a.m., and lunch will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. All meals will be dine-in only and will be free to children ages 1-18 years.

According to the Texas Department of Agriculture, in Texas more than 1 in 5 children struggle with hunger. When the school year ends, children often lose access to consistent, nutritious school meals. Programs such as the BISD summer meals program help ensure that local children have access to food during the summer.

The program, which began locally on June 2, is provided through the Texas Department of Agriculture’s Summer Meals Programs and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Summer Nutrition Programs for Kids (SUN).

For more information, call Mark Nelson, the BISD Food Services Director, at the BISD Administration Office at 254-522-9600.
