Born in Dallas County in 1946, he moved to Breckenridge, Texas in 1978, where he spent the majority of his life and raised his family. Jim was known for his love of the outdoors and his talent for craftsmanship. He was an avid hunter, a skilled builder, and above all, a passionate fisherman. At age 24, he was named a professional fishing guide at Toledo Bend Reservoir in Sabine County, Texas. He also guided fishing trips on Lake Tawakoni, east of Dallas.
In 1983, he married Karen Squyres of Ranger, the mother of his children, and made Breckenridge his permanent home. Over the years, Jim owned and operated a transmission shop in Breckenridge before working for the State of Texas at the Walker Sayle Unit. Following his retirement, he continued to do carpentry work until health issues required his full attention at the age of 78.
Jim lived a long, full life marked by adventure, love, and service. His happiest days were spent outdoors with family and friends, creating memories that will be cherished for generations.
A man of deep faith, he was a devoted follower of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He filled his home with worship music and was always among the first to arrive at church services, enjoying the worship team’s preparations. Jim faithfully attended the church led by Pastor Steve Spoon for over eight years. His family takes great comfort in knowing that he is now rejoicing in the presence of his Savior.
Jim is preceded in death by his father, Jim Burke Gill. He is survived by his mother, Martha Crews of Dallas; and his four children: Shane Gill of Lone Camp, Derek Gill and wife Malarie of Granbury, Caleb Gill and wife Jessica of Lubbock, and Kaytie Gill and her partner Caleb Herring of Breckenridge.
He was the proud grandfather of ten grandchildren: Parks and Pate Gill (children of Shane and Cheyanna), Cooper and Kaia Gill (children of Derek and Malarie), Jayden, Addison, and Kaylynn Gill (children of Caleb and Jessica), Brynlee and Ostynn, (children of Kaytie), and Hayden Herring, whom he lovingly embraced as a special bonus grandchild.
Jim O’Neal Gill will be remembered for his warmth, his faith, and the quiet strength with which he lived his life. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
