For those looking to begin a career as a licensed vocational nurse (LVN), Texas State Technical College will accept applications for the Vocational Nursing fall semester from April 1 through June 13 at the Breckenridge, Harlingen and Sweetwater campuses.

Current students said TSTC provides the best learning environment.

“The way our instructors teach us gives us the effort to make it through the program,” Lilian Ngina, a current student at the Breckenridge campus, said. “This has been an amazing experience for me.”

Taylor Miller, of Abilene, agreed. “It has been worth the drive for me to take classes (in Breckenridge),” she said. “The instructors are more engaged to make sure we are successful.”

Efrain Mascorro, a student at the Harlingen campus, said the labs are essential to his learning. “A skill that I learned was about hand-washing, and it’s a priority in health care,” he said.

Destiny Morales, of Harlingen, said she is beginning to form the foundation of being a nurse. “I’ve learned the correct steps to do a task and how to explain a situation to a patient with accurate information,” she said.

To help prospective students learn more about the program, virtual information sessions have been scheduled for the West Texas and Harlingen campuses. The West Texas information sessions will be held virtually beginning at 3 p.m. on each Tuesday now through May 6. For more information about the information sessions and program requirements, visit https://www.tstc.edu/programs/vocational-nursing.

Information sessions in Harlingen are scheduled for the first and third Fridays of each month through April 18, for each Friday in May, and for June 6 and 13. The sessions will begin at 4 p.m. in Room 126 of the Eddie Lucio Building on that campus.

Upon completion of the program and passing the National Council Licensure Examination, graduates are classified as LVNs.

According to onetonline.org, LVN jobs were forecast to increase 17% in Texas between 2020 and 2030. The median annual salary for LVNs in Texas is $57,010, the website showed.
