This year, the Breckenridge Junior High School took on the challenge of organizing a theater group and entering the UIL One-Act Play contest for the first time.

Led by teachers Chelsea Escalon and Christy Robertson, the student cast and crew worked all semester on their production of “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.”

Last week, they placed second at the OAP Festival at Tarleton University on Tuesday and won first place at the District OAP competition on Wednesday. Additionally, several of the students earned individual honors — one for best crew, two as all-star cast members and three as honorable mention all-star cast.

They will present an encore performance at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11, in Bailey Auditorium.

After a rehearsal last week, Escalon wrote on Facebook, “Today’s dress rehearsal for ‘The Best Christmas Pageant Ever!’ was absolutely fabtabulous! These kids made us laugh and taught us a little lesson at the same time. They worked together as a team and picked each other up when things went awry. I am so very proud of them!”

Throughout the semester, the students and school staff worked to not only prepare for the play but also to raise funds to pay for things such as the licensing fees for the right to perform the play and costumes and other related expenses. They sold glow sticks, held a bake sale and solicited donations from the community.

“Thank you again for a great community that always supports our kids!” Escalon posted on Facebook after Wednesday’s winning performance. “And thank you to Christy Robertson for being my right hand in this adventure. She’s always someone I can count on and I appreciate her help more than she will ever know. Thanks to Cassie Johnson for mentoring me through this new adventure. And thank you to our administration for believing in us and always backing us. And way to go Broncos for knocking it out of the park!”
