Herbert Wayne Jackson, 79, of Breckenridge, Texas, passed away on Sunday, October 27, 2024, in Abilene, Texas. Graveside services will be held at the Breckenridge Cemetery, 10 a.m. Thursday, October 31, 2024, with Don Bearden officiating the service.
Herbert Wayne Jackson was born to parents Herbert and Mary Shirley Jackson Elmore on August 22, 1945, in Sweetwater, Texas. Wayne, as to what most people knew him by, was raised in a family that owned and operated a handmade boot/leather goods store. It was in that environment that Wayne learned his creative and hard-working ethics which followed him all his life. At a young age of 20, he enlisted into the United States Air Force and served honorably as an aircraft mechanic until his release in 1968. It was while in the Air Force, Wayne continued to expand his mind and talent to build or fix anything. In later years of his life, it became a family joke that even a doghouse could not be built, until Wayne created the blueprints for it!
On July 5, 1970, he married the love of his life, Stella “Sissy” Story in Haskell, Texas. Together the couple raised two children, Jon and Jessica. The young family eventually made Breckenridge their home and attended Bethany Baptist Church, where Wayne was a Sunday School teacher for many years. In his later years, he enjoyed hanging out at the local Senior Citizen Center socializing and playing dominos.
Wayne is preceded in death by his parents, Herbert Jackson and Mary Jackson Elmore; stepfather Robert Elmore; stepbrother Bobby Elmore; and wife Stella “Sissy” Jackson.
Wayne is survived by son Jon Jackson and wife Robyn of Breckenridge; daughter Jessica Jackson of Abilene; grandchildren, Elle, Joni, Joel, Braxton, Izaiah, Kayleigh and Mykan; sister Winona Jackson of Columbia, Missouri; along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
