On the steps of Breckenridge High School this morning, Aug. 29, students, faculty and others gathered for the announcement of the 2024-25 Buckaroo Queen and Great Lord Chamberlain. With the Buckaroo Marching Band providing the drum rolls, Principal Paul Armstrong announced Yanet Benitez as this year’s Buckaroo Queen and Sawyer Wimberley as Great Lord Chamberlain.
According to school officials, the coronation for the class of 2025 is being celebrated as the 100th anniversary of the Buckaroo Queen. Early school records are scarce, but the 1925 Buckaroo yearbook shows Ruth Stout was crowned Buckaroo Queen that year. The previous yearbook (1924) shows that Louise Sarver was selected as the BHS Beauty.
Although through the years the Buckaroo Queen had attendants and escorts, 1943 seems to be the first year that the Great Lord Chamberlain title was used. Prior to that, the Buckaroo Queen was accompanied by Best Athlete or the Most Popular Boy. In 1943, James Dixon was Great Lord Chamberlain and Frances Wright was Queen.
The date of the coronation for the BHS Class of 2025 has not been formally announced, but the ceremony traditionally takes place in January or February. Throughout the year, the Buckaroo Queen and Great Lord Chamberlain make appearances at events such as parades and other activities.
