It may seem like the last school year just ended, but the reality is, the Breckenridge Independent School District’s 2024-25 classes start in one month, on Aug. 7, and back-to-school related, community activities kick off later this week.

The Blessing Room

The Christian Fellowship Church’s Blessing Room, at 810 E. Elm St., will host a Back to School Bash, offering free clothes, school supplies and hot dogs on Saturday, July 13.

The event will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The organizers ask parents and/or guardians to bring their school-age children with them in order to get backpacks with school supplies in them. There will also be clothing and shoes available for the kids, limited to three outfits per child, so that they are able to help as many families as possible.

During the Back to School Bash, there will be hot dogs and drinks available, while supplies last.

SMH’s Back to School Bash

Stephens Memorial Hospital will host a Back to School Bash with snow cones and school supplies on Thursday, July 25, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the SMH Business Office, 207 S. Geneva St., across the street from the hospital’s front entrance.

There will be snow cones and free back packs with school supplies available at no charge to local families.

To help fill the backpacks, SMH is holding a School Supply Drive through July 19. Donations may be dropped off in the hospital’s front lobby, at the Physical Therapy and Wellness Center or at the Breckenridge Medical Center. Items needed include pencils, erasers, pens, markers, crayons, colored pencils, highlighters, dry erase markers, notebooks, binders, folders, paper, composition notebooks, glue, glue sticks, wipes, tissues, Ziploc bags and backpacks.

BISD Events

School starts on Aug. 7, but there are several upcoming BISD events for students and/or their parents.

All students – new and returning – need to enroll through the school district’s online registration process by Aug. 1. Additionally, parents of students who need to ride a bus to and from school need to fill out the BISD Bus Enrollment Form online for each child who will ride the bus.

Meet the Teacher for East Elementary and South Elementary will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Aug. 2,  for homeroom teacher assignment and schedule pickup.

Bronco Roundup for incoming sixth graders at Breckenridge Junior High will begin at 5 p.m. on Aug. 5, at BJHS.

Incoming seventh and eighth grade students can pick up schedules anytime from 10 a.m. to noon on Aug. 2 at BJHS.

Incoming 11th and 12th grade students can pick up schedules from 9 a.m. to noon on Aug. 1 at Breckenridge High School. Incoming  ninth and 10th grade students can pick up schedules from 9 a.m. to noon on Aug. 2 at BHS.

State of Texas Sales Tax Holiday

Although it’s a couple of days after the first day of school in Breckenridge, the State of Texas will offer back-to-school shoppers a break on Aug. 9-11 with the annual Sales Tax Holiday.

On a variety of items, including backpacks, clothing, shoes, school supplies and more, there will be no sales tax charged, saving local shoppers about 8 percent on their shopping expenses. There is a complete list of what does and does not qualify for the exemption on the Texas Comptroller’s website (click here).
