Walter Cleavenger, Sr., age 91, of Breckenridge, passed away Monday, December 4, 2023. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to Morehart Mortuary.

Walter Lee Cleavenger was born on September 22, 1932, in Clarksburg, West Virginia, to parents Gilbert Dorsey Cleavenger and Vernia May Dunlap Cleavenger. He graduated high school and then went on to attend college. On January 1, 1954, Walter married Dorothea “Dot’ Jean Simons in Clarksburg, West Virginia. He worked as a Deputy Sheriff. In 1967, he and the family moved to Virginia, where he was a teacher and coach for 27 years. He coached girls’ basketball for several years, Junior Varsity in 1978 and Varsity from 1980 to 1994, going undefeated for 2 years, and was known to his players as Coach Clevy. After retiring from the school, Walter drove for Enterprise for 16 years. He was a very active member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Stuarts Draft, Virginia, for 47 years. He sang in the church choir and was involved in the food pantry. In 2014, Walt and Dot moved to Breckenridge, Texas, to be closer to their daughter and family. While in Breckenridge, they attended First Methodist Church. He loved his family, and was lovingly known as Bop to his grandsons. Walter loved helping people and will be missed greatly.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Vernia Cleavenger; his wife, Dot Cleavenger; seven siblings; and one son, Walter Lee Cleavenger, Jr.

He is survived by one daughter, Elizabeth Ann Byerly and husband Tim of Breckenridge, Texas; two grandchildren, Kyle Richard Cleavenger of Alexandria, Virginia, and Andrew Dorsey Byerly of Breckenridge; and two siblings, Eugene Gilbert Cleavenger and wife Juanita, and Loveta Grace Nutter.

Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice and may be left at Morehart Mortuary. Condolences may be sent online at www.morehartmortuary.net.

Founded in 2017 by journalists Tony Pilkington and Carla McKeown, the Breckenridge Texan provides daily local news coverage, weekly newsletters, photo galleries, a community calendar, and obituaries. The outlet serves both local residents and people outside the community seeking information about Breckenridge and Stephens County, including potential new residents and businesses. They chose the non-profit structure to maintain local control of news coverage while minimizing the financial burden on the community.
