Jeffery Earnest, 62, of Breckenridge, Texas, passed away at his residence on Monday, October 30, 2023, with his wife by his side. His funeral service at Gunsight Baptist Church will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 4, 2023, with Charles West officiating. His burial at the Breckenridge Cemetery will immediately follow. All services are under the direction of Melton-Kitchens Funeral Home.

Jeffery Allen Earnest was born in San Jose, California, on July 7, 1961, to Olga “Bunny” (Saenz) Earnest and Harrill Earnest. The family moved from California to Texas, and in 1980, Jeffery graduated from Breckenridge High School. A little over six years later, on August 22, 1986, he married his high school sweetheart, Jana Fisher. They were blessed with their only child – a daughter – Janlyn.

Jeffery loved kids and could often be found coaching little dribblers basketball and girls’ softball. Over his 20+ years with the Breckenridge Independent School district, he made a multitude of lifelong friends. He loved visiting with the kids and encouraging them to always do their best in everything they set their minds out to accomplish. After his retirement, he would have kids come and strike up a conversation with him. And although he might not have remembered each and every one of their names, they always remembered him! He was the kind of guy who never met a stranger… someone who would gladly give you the shirt off of his back if you needed it.

Jeffery was preceded in death by his father, Harrill; grandparents, W.D. and Thelma Earnest and Joe & Eulalia Saenz; an infant brother; stepmother, Ann Earnest; aunt, Rachel Trevino; and uncles, Reginald Earnest, James Earnest, and Paul Earnest.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Jana; daughter, Janlyn Altum and husband Patrick; grandchildren, Cade Altum and Kylie Altum; mother, Bunny; brothers, Willy Earnest and Alben Earnest; sisters, Renee Hall and Tyra Thomas; step-sisters, Tina Meador and Missy Meador; in-laws, Larry and Peggy Holder; five nieces; one nephew; along with a large number of aunts, uncles, cousins, great-nieces, great-nephews, and friends who will miss him dearly.

Memorial donations in Jeffery’s name can be made to Meals on Wheels in Breckenridge and can be left at Melton-Kitchens Funeral Home. Condolences can be left online at meltonkitchens.com.
