Johnnie Oates, 79, of Breckenridge, Texas,  passed away September 20, 2023, with his wife by his side in Abilene, Texas.

A cremation has taken place and no services are scheduled at the request of the family under the direction of Melton Kitchens Funeral home.

Johnnie was born in Stewart, Mississippi to Thelma and Bill Oates.

His consideration for others was profound, always helping with anything. He served 20 years in the United States Air Force followed by civil service. He enjoyed serving as a C-130 Crew Chief, teaching others about the aircraft, and traveling the world. His many hobbies included fishing, camping, trips to the coast and mountains. He was an exceptional water skier and enjoyed teaching others to water ski. He enjoyed an occasional trip to Reno and Las Vegas, Nevada.

He spent 60 years married to the love of his life, Peggy Oates. They enjoyed many wonderful years traveling the United States.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy Oates of Breckenridge; daughter, Danette Neff and son-in-law Robert of Rocklin, California; daughter, Johnetta Oates of New Mexico; and grandsons, Auston Wardlow and Ben Neff; sister, Marie Coppedge and brother-in-law Robert of Las Cruces, New Mexico; brother-in-law, Mel Martin and wife Jackie of Hobbs, New Mexico; five great-grandchildren; and three nephews and two nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three aunts, grandmother and grandson, Shawn Calapp.
