Edward O. “Ed” Weatherby, 100, of Breckenridge, passed away in Beaumont, Texas, on Wednesday, May 31, 2023. His graveside service at the Breckenridge Cemetery will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, June 5, 2023. All services are under the direction of Melton-Kitchens Funeral Home.

Ed was born to Joe David Weatherby and Vivian Woods Weatherby on April 19, 1923, in Ivan, Texas. His family, which consisted of three brothers and one sister, moved to Iraan, Texas, where he grew up.

He joined the US Navy after graduating from Iraan High School. While in the service, he was a Radioman First Class and Chief Radioman, serving during World War II.

Ed married Gwen Nell Latimer in McCamey, Texas, and later had two daughters: Nancy Ann, who was born on his birthday in 1951, and Terry Lynne, born in 1956.

After being honorably discharged from the service, Ed went to work for Gulf Oil Company in West Texas, where he stayed for 17 years. Following his time with Gulf, he was employed by the Oil & Gas Division of the Texas Railroad Commission, a position he held for 25 years until his retirement.

Throughout his life, Ed participated in and loved watching sports. He played football and pole vaulted during his high school years. As he got older, he became an avid golfer, often winning local tournaments. Golfing was a part of Ed’s life all the way through his 92nd birthday. Watching the Dallas Cowboys and golf on television were his favorite pastimes.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Jessie, Joe, and Raymond; and sister, Rose. His wife, Gwen, passed away in 1998.

Ed is survived by his daughters, Nancy Bush and husband Don of Beaumont, and Terri Griffith and husband David of Gilmer, Texas; grandchildren, Matt Bush and wife Angela, Mark Bush and wife Brandi, Ben Griffith, and Sarah Griffith; along with great-grandchildren, Mason, Cassie, Cameron, and Hudson.

Memorial donations in Ed’s name can be made to an organization or charity of the donor’s choice and may be left at Melton-Kitchens Funeral Home. Condolences can be left online at meltonkitchens.com.
